Tri-Valley Haven Direct-Service Volunteer Opportunities FAQ

1. What Direct Service volunteer opportunities are available at Tri-Valley Haven?
At Tri-Valley Haven, we offer three direct-service volunteer roles on top of our general (Food Pantry and Thrift Store) volunteering opportunities: Crisis Line Volunteer, Legal Clinic Volunteer, and Advocate. Each role involves providing essential support to individuals affected by domestic violence and sexual assault within our community.

2. Is training required to become a volunteer?
Yes, all volunteers must complete 70 hours of dual-training in domestic violence and sexual assault. This comprehensive training equips volunteers with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively support our clients.

3. What are the responsibilities of a Crisis Line Volunteer?
Crisis Line Volunteers are responsible for answering calls on Tri-Valley Haven’s crisis line, which is diverted to their home during overnight hours and on weekends. Typical shifts run from 10 PM to 7 AM Sunday through Thursday, and from 10 PM to 8 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. There are also additional shifts available during the daytime on weekends. Volunteers provide critical support to callers in distress, offering a listening ear and guidance.

4. What qualifications do I need to be a Crisis Line Volunteer?
To become a Crisis Line Volunteer, you must be at least 18 years old, possess strong listening skills, and have a deep sense of empathy. Successful completion of the 70-hour training is required, along with a commitment to volunteer for at least one year. Most volunteers take one or two shifts per month.

5. What does a Legal Clinic Volunteer do?
Legal Clinic Volunteers assist clients with the paperwork required for Temporary Restraining Orders and may accompany clients to court when necessary. Additionally, volunteers may be asked to drop off and pick up documents from the court. Legal Clinic hours are held on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in Pleasanton, and on Thursdays from 2 to 4 PM in Livermore.

6. What are the requirements for becoming a Legal Clinic Volunteer?
To be a Legal Clinic Volunteer, you need to be computer literate, empathetic, and able to successfully complete the 70-hour dual-training. A commitment to volunteering for at least one year is required, with volunteers typically attending one or two clinics per month.

7. What is the role of an Sexual Assault  Advocate at Tri-Valley Haven?
As an Advocate, you will respond to crisis line calls related to sexual assault and domestic violence. Advocates provide in-person emotional support to victims by accompanying them to hospitals, police departments, courts, or other necessary appointments. Advocates play a crucial role in ensuring that victims receive the support and advocacy they need during these critical moments.

8. What qualifications do I need to become an SA Advocate?
To become an Advocate, you must be at least 18 years old, a good listener, and empathetic. You must successfully complete the 70-hour training and commit to volunteering for at least one year. Additionally, you need to be a licensed driver with your own transportation, provide proof of a negative TB test within the last year, and show proof of Rubella immunization. Advocates usually take one or two shifts per month, and must be able to respond to calls within 5 minutes and arrive at the hospital or police department within 45 minutes.

9. How often do volunteers typically work?
Volunteers at Tri-Valley Haven generally commit to one or two shifts or clinics per month, depending on their specific role. The frequency of shifts allows volunteers to provide consistent support while balancing other personal and professional commitments.

10. How long is the commitment for volunteers?
We ask that all direct-service volunteers commit to at least one year of service. This ensures continuity in the support provided to our clients and allows volunteers to fully engage with their roles and make a meaningful impact.
